The world's first high-speed railway in severe cold region, Harbin-Dalian High-speed Railway, has transported over 1 billion passengers in total

Reporters learned from China Railway Shenyang Group Co., Ltd. that as of June 17, 2025, the Harbin-Dalian high-speed railway had safely transported a cumulative total of over 1 billion passengers (including cross-line and through passengers).

As the world's first high-speed railway in severe cold regions, the Harbin-Dalian High-Speed Railway experiences a maximum temperature difference of over 70°C between winter and summer along its route. Since its official opening on December 1, 2012, the Harbin-Dalian High-Speed Railway has established a safety management system that integrates infrastructure, mobile equipment, comprehensive inspection, disaster prevention and mitigation, and emergency rescue. A systematic and comprehensive safety guarantee system for high-speed railways in severe cold regions has been established, ensuring the safe and orderly operation of the Harbin-Dalian High-Speed Railway.

Over the past decade since its opening, the Harbin-Dalian High-Speed Railway has formed a railway network with itself as the main north-south axis. To the north, it connects three high-speed railways: Harbin-Qiqihar, Harbin-Mudanjiang, and Harbin-Jiaxing. To the middle, it links the Changchun-Hunchun Intercity Railway, the Baidun section of the Shenyang-Jiaxing High-Speed Railway, and the Changchun-Baicheng-Ulanhot Railway. To the south, it connects high-speed railways such as Shenyang-Dandong and Xintong-Tonghua, as well as the Dalian-Tonghua Express Railway. It also links up with the Beijing-Shenyang section of the Beijing-Harbin High-Speed Railway, integrating into the national high-speed railway network. Within the year, it will complete its connection with the Shenyang-Baicheng High-Speed Railway, forming a 2-hour economic circle centered around cities like Shenyang, Changchun, and Dalian, and a 3-hour business travel circle from major cities to Beijing. Today, Harbin-Dalian High-Speed Railway trains have connected major cities in Northeast, North, Central, and East China. This extensive high-speed railway network has greatly shortened regional spatial and temporal distances, narrowed the "economic distance" between regions, and injected new vitality into the revitalization and development of Northeast China.
